Single Workshop

Abstract

This workshop highlights the project of classifying and solving Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) and renormalization group (RG) flows between them. From critical phenomena to QCD to quantum gravity, many themes at the frontiers of theoretical physics converge on this endeavor. Our focus will be on strongly coupled theories, and on spacetime dimensions greater than two, where a lot remains to be uncovered compared to the relatively well-explored two-dimensional case. A central role will be played by the bootstrap philosophy - the idea that fundamental principles can be used to determine dynamics.
The goals will be to explore general constraints on conformal theories and RG flows which can be established non-perturbatively and without relying on Lagrangians, and then to use these constraints for obtaining definite predictions.

29 Jun, 2016 - 11:00-	Stefan Hollands	OPE Algebra	Seminar	Abstract The OPE is not only useful as practical tool, but also has a wider conceptual significance as an algebraic backbone of quantum field theories. It is best understood in the context of conformal field theories in two - and recently also higher - dimensions, but in principle its validity is not restricted to this context. In this talk, I first describe in detail the convergence properties of the expansion in the context of perturbative Lagrangian quantum field theories by presenting rather detailed estimates of the remainder in the OPE applied to a correlation function with spectators. These estimates, which are valid to arbitrary loop order, show in particular that the convergence properties of the expansion are considerably better than previously thought. I also describe novel recursion relation for OPE coefficients which allows the characterization and computation of OPE coefficients of CFTs perturbed by relevant or marginal operators. The formula automatically (!) incorporates all aspects of renormalization.
