Training Week

Exploring New Frontiers in Cosmology

This event can be attended either in presence or on line
Jul 06, 2026 - Jul 12, 2026

Abstract
The training week will offer an introductory program specifically designed for students and early-career researchers, with the aim of preparing participants who may not yet be experts on the topic for the main workshop. The school will focus on key cosmological observables relevant to the workshop, as well as methodologies for data analysis and statistical techniques used to compare theoretical models with observations. It will feature a combination of lectures, hands-on tutorials, and guided discussions. At the end of the week, students will also have the opportunity to present their own work and receive feedback from leading experts in the field. Dedicated discussion sessions will provide a valuable space for participants to engage with fellow researchers, ask questions, and potentially initiate new collaborations.

Topics

Topics covered will include:
- Statistical and Numerical methods for Bayesian analysis & model comparison - Tanvi Karwal (Chicago University);
- Large-scale structure and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations - Anna Porredon (Madrid, CIEMAT);
- Supernovae cosmology & the Cosmic distance ladder - Daniel Scolnic (Duke University);
- CMB cosmology and next-generation surveys - Tristan L. Smith (Swarthmore University);
- Theory of dark energy and dark matter - Alessandra Silvestri (Leiden University);
- Cosmology with Gravitational Waves - Antonella Palmese (Carnegie Mellon University);
- Colloquium on Philosophy and History of Cosmology - Pedro Ferreira (Oxford University).

How to apply

If you wish to attend the Training Week please make sure to select the corresponding week in the workshop's main application form (i.e. date of arrival 06/07/2026).

Please note that in-person attendance at the school will be limited to approximately 40 students. The lectures are primarily aimed at PhD students, but applications from younger students and postdoctoral researchers are also welcome. Applicants who are currently PhD or Master’s students should send an e-mail indicating the name of their supervisor, the starting date of their PhD, and a short CV (w.giare@sheffield.ac.uk, elsa.teixeira@umontpellier.fr). Applications must be submitted by 28 February 2026, and participants will have the possibility to attend either in person or remotely.
