Workshop

High-energy QCD after the start of the LHC

Sep 05, 2011 - Oct 21, 2011

Abstract
With the start of the LHC physics program, high-energy particle physics has entered a new era, which should lead us to give answers to fundamental issues such as, for instance, the origin of electro-weak symmetry breaking, the existence of supersymmetry and the nature of the dark matter in the universe. Since the LHC is a hadron collider machine, all the interesting high-pT new reactions are essentially initiated by QCD hard scattering of the partons in the colliding protons. To claim for new-physics signals, a good control of QCD and of the known Standard Model (SM) processes is necessary. The workshop is devoted to the status of QCD theory after the first results of the LHC data analyses. Its general purpose is to review the developments in the theoretical description of high-energy strong interactions, to confront the theoretical predictions with the data (including Tevatron data and an assesment of the role of the final HERA data), to discuss open questions (in particular, those that will certainly arise from the first LHC data) and further needs, and to devise future research activities and strategies. Reviewing the theory/experiment and identifying areas where further progress is demanded, is crucial for adjusting the LHC physics program in the following years.

Within the workshop, from september 12nd to 16th, there will be a Focus Week with a series of lectures and review talks on various topics in QCD theory and phenomenology at the LHC.

Topics
* Hard scattering and multiparticle final states
* Monte Carlo generators
* Jet studies and dynamics of jet production and fragmentation
* Parton distribution functions (high-precision studies, dynamics of strong colour fields)
* New formal developments
* Minimum bias, underlying event, soft and diffractive processes
* Forward physics, ultraperipheral collisions, hevy-ion collisions
